Back in the Edo period (1600-1900), Sakayas Japanese liquor shops that provided patrons with a place to stay warm while drinking. During this period, there were comparatively more single men than women, and so Izakayas became popular venues for casual dining and heavy drinking.
This first Guu Izakaya in Toronto was established in the winter of 2009. Long line-ups in the bone-chillingly cold Toronto nights were a common sight outside of Izakaya. Everyone wants a piece!
