How Does Whole Body Vibration Work?
Simply put, Whole Body Vibration is about three things – Creating movement, reactions, and gravity.
The machine itself creates movement in the body by moving up to 30 times a second! It is also designed to create reactions.
When you stand on the plate of a Vibration Machine, the plate moves in a see-saw type motion, bringing your body slightly out of balance.
Without us even being aware of it, when we are in motion our muscles are always reacting to keep us upright and balanced. This natural reaction is what’s being employed with WBV. By keeping the body constantly a little out of balance, these muscles have to keep working. Every time the plate moves, your body had no choice but to respond to the challenge it is offered – rebalancing you on the plate by engaging and disengaging (contracting and relaxing) several times a second.
And the best part is, because the reactions are so quick and involuntary, it actually feels good! The sensation is more like a massage or gentle stretching – nothing like pounding through several sets at a gym.
Some of the General Health Benefits of Whole Body Vibration
* Increased blood oxygenation and circulation means more oxygen and nutrition delivered to the body’s cells, especially relative to areas where circulation is poor as a result of injury or disease.
* Improved function of the lymphatic system results in improved fluid balance throughout the body, improved fatty acid distribution and improved immune function. As the waste collection system for the body, improved lymphatic drainage results in more effective toxin removal.
* With each vibratory movement (occurring multiple times per second), joints are palpated, improving circulation of fluid within the cartilage, lubricating joint surfaces and circulating synovial fluid in the joint capsule.
* Under the influence of Whole Body Vibration, proprioceptors (the body’s motion and force sensors) are constantly updating the brain about the body’s changing position in relation to space. The enlivening of these neurological pathways and the processing of this information in the brain improves balance, coordination and athletic performance. This activity is sometimes referred to as “neuromuscular re-education”.
* Increased muscle activity prompts the development of lean muscle tissue during Whole Body Vibration exercise.
* The gentle weight loading on the bones in conjunction with alternating tension on their surface at the point of tendon attachment simulates many of the beneficial aspects of walking and jogging, resulting in improved bone mass and density.
