Description
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO #0001225) with a Doctorate Degree in Counselling Psychology from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, a Masters Degree in Counselling and an Honours BA in Psychology from the University of Ottawa.
Over the past 15 years I have provided individual, couples and group therapy for a variety of mental health, addiction, relationship, and life issues. I am also a professor at Mohawk College and McMaster University's Centre for Continuing Education, Addiction Education Program and am passionate about teaching and learning principles, course/curriculum development and instruction.
Over the years I have specialized in Interprofessional Collaborative Mental Health Care in Family Health Teams, Trauma & Addiction informed practice and Women's Perinatal Mental Health.
My approach to therapy is grounded in what has been called "radical acceptance" and rooted in indigenous mental health practices. This approach is often balanced with a number of different post-modern techniques such as narrative, solution focused and process experiential therapy. I have additional training and experience in cognitive behaviour therapy and motivational interviewing.
When appropriate, I often incorporate mindfulness practices within sessions. I believe that psychotherapy is an unfolding process of self awareness and empowerment. I believe that people already possess the knowledge and wisdom to know what is best for them. My role is to tap into that inner knowledge to uncover the strength and courage to move towards living a valued life.
