I teach from my home studio located in Southwood Community, Southwest, Calgary, AB, 20 minutes drive from downtown. I studied music degrees at McGill University in Montreal and a Masters of Music Composition from John's Hopkins University on full scholarship. I also hold an A.R.C.T. in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada and am proud to claim more than 10 years of teaching experience. I struggled in learning to play the piano when I was young, so much so that my teacher kicked me out of his studio when I was 13 years old because I only really cared about playing hockey. By utilizing current research on the psychology and support required for long term success at learning an instrument, I make a point of leveraging the student, parent, teacher pyramid of success with the importance of autonomy, relatedness, and competency. When all of these things are connected, it's hard not to succeed at learning and loving to play an instrument. I help my students strive towards a life long enjoyment of learning and playing from the heart for themselves and others. Having endured rigorous classical training myself, I teach from an empathetic perspective that strives for musicality and enjoyment of the process over perfection and technical precision. I think that when people are challenged and having fun, they learn more and succeed at whatever they wish to accomplish. I enjoy teaching all styles of music including: classical, popular music, folk, jazz and blues. I also enjoy sharing my background in composition by teaching theory, song writing and composition.
